This is the quintessence of darkness
A son of Belial was bound for hell
As he lay bound in a prison cell
The extent of his crimes no tongue could tell
As the sun still hid from Golgotha
This is the quintessence of regret
As the nameless wretch was led through the gate
As Pilate approached in pomp and state
To the judgment seat to decide his fate
As the sun burst forth on Golgotha
This is the quintessence of fear
As the whip cut through his back like fire
As he crawled through the streets in the dust and mire
With the cross on his back, he climbed still higher
As the sun rose on Golgotha
This is the quintessence of agony
As his bleeding limbs to the cross were nailed
As the cruel cold iron his flesh impaled
While the frenzied mob against him railed
As the sun beat down on Golgotha
This is the quintessence of despair
As his life passed before his dimming eyes
As he heard far below the crowd and their cries
While his flesh fought against such a heinous demise
As the sun tortured him on Golgotha
This is the quintessence of anger
As he gazed at the One who could set him free
The One who was hanging just as he
As he forgave his foes from that bloodstained tree
As the sun began to set on Golgotha
This is the quintessence of shame
As that loving gaze pierced his soul
As his life sins were opened like a ghastly scroll
Now he felt himself sinking down to Sheol
As the sunset flamed on Golgotha
This is the quintessence of injustice
As he looked at the Man who had done no wrong
As curses were hurled by the hateful throng
With mocking, His anguish to prolong
As the sun sank low over Golgotha
This is the quintessence of hope
As he asked for a gift only Christ could give
As he longed after death to be sure he would live
As he fought the sin that held him captive
As the last rays faded on Golgotha
This is the quintessence of peace
As the answer came back he had longed to hear
As he heard the words through the pain and the fear
Now the gates of heaven seemed very near
As the hill hid the sun from Golgotha
This is the quintessence of love
As his spirit broke free from his body of clay
As he followed his Saviour who showed him the way
As he crossed from the night into brilliant day
As darkness reigned on Golgotha
